Welcome to the future-now of Japanese pop-electronica. Actually, if you’ve just arrived, you are a little late. Aira Mitsuki arrived in 2007, but the funkadelic electropop movement is nearly a decade old in Japan. So, while far from the first, Aira Mitsuki is also far from the last.
Since the rise of “otaku” (some call them “fan boys/girls”, some call them “experts”, some call them “nerds/geeks/weirdos”) and their establishment in the “Electric Town” of Akihabara, where once the average Japanese businessman and housewife could price-haggle for top-quality household goods, niche culture is invading the mainstream. And this has given rise to the Wannabe Watanbes—Japanese girls and boys who want to be superstars.
Sporting geeky looks—a fashion that can only be described as Akihabara-kei (“of Akihabara”), and clutching science fiction lyrics, these eager PV lip-syncers give it their all. And their fans give right back by turning sappy, parapara dance-driven, electropop beats into overnight hits.
It might not be pretty, it might not be exactly “cool” in most circles, but it’ll either suck you in and make you a hardcore fan, or melt your brain trying to convert you… welcome to it.
